A Technical Foundations Workshop...
Overview
Understanding your camera is not about mastering controls or memorizing settings. It’s about learning how your camera responds to light, so you can make thoughtful choices with confidence and care.
This workshop offers a calm, practical introduction to camera fundamentals through the Field Notes approach to photography as attention rather than competition. Together, we explore how light behaves, how cameras interpret what they see, and how small technical decisions shape the feeling and meaning of an image.
The focus is not on perfection or speed, but on clarity, curiosity, and understanding cause and effect, giving you the confidence to work more intentionally behind the camera.
Who This Workshop Is For
This workshop is for photographers who want to feel more oriented and less overwhelmed when using their camera. You might be someone who relies heavily on automatic modes, feels unsure why your images don’t always match what you saw, or wants to slow down and understand why certain settings work the way they do. No advanced technical knowledge is required — this is a supportive space to ask questions, experiment gently, and build confidence at your own pace.
What We’ll Explore
Throughout the day, we begin with light — noticing direction, intensity, and contrast before changing settings. From there, we look at exposure not as a single “correct” answer, but as a series of choices, each with its own trade-offs.
You’ll learn how aperture, shutter speed, and ISO work together, when it makes sense to use manual or semi-automatic modes, and how working within simple constraints can actually make photographing feel calmer and clearer. Technical concepts are always introduced in context, with an emphasis on understanding why something happens rather than memorizing rules.
How This Workshop Is Taught
Field Notes teaches technical skills as a way of building capacity, not control. You can expect clear explanations, hands-on observation, time for questions, and a non-competitive environment that values curiosity over performance.
The goal is not to perfect technique, but to understand your camera well enough to work with intention — and to feel confident knowing when to stop adjusting. For a sample agenda of our day together, please click the link here.
