The story of a photographer
Photography in many ways feels like it snuck up and then all at once consumed me like a great love affair with nature. In my early 20's, I had always wanted to go to art school and was lucky enough to be surrounded by amazing women who had gone to art school... I never did make it out of my small town in those early years.
Often when we were in the studio together in Terrace covered in oil paint and snacking on fresh scones the ladies would say to me... "Lucy, one day it will come rushing back into your life like an old friend."
Art that is... This time I would trade my paint for pixels.
For the past decade, I've been traveling extensively across British Columbia working in remote Indigenous communities to teach driving while also supporting Indigenous communities to start their own social enterprise driving schools. Being a driving instructor wasn't ever an occupation that I thought would consume my heart, but after understanding the impact of colonization on transportation security and the location of remote reserves I had a bit of an Ah-Ha moment.
If you can't drive, how can you get to work or to school... or food even?
As individuals sat beside me sharing stories, a common theme appeared in their kindness and words. "If you've always wanted to be an artist, why are you not being an artist?" With each village, I felt as though my students held up a mirror... Do you know her? Are you proud of her?
Watching community members succeed and finding deep joy in who they were becoming, also challenged me to follow my own advice and lean into a life designed by the intersection of time and light.
Eventually my iPhone 12 was traded for my Canon R6 and soon I laid down my car keys in exchange for a one-way ticket to Indonesia where I began my long walk around the world.
An entrepreneur, mother and adventure seeker... Living on Haida Gwaii.
Having worked corporately on international construction projects, holding an MBA and working towards a Doctorate in Social Sciences, my name is Lucy Sager the owner of Field Notes Photography and it would be my great honour to be your photography guide.
Photography means different things to different people, but what I know for sure is that it creates memories and a profound sense of reflection that is impossible to replicate.
I can't wait to walk beside you as you discover your own story while chasing light.
Lucy Sager ~
